The Red Lion...
Out of 900 'Red Lions' this one was voted in the top four, don't miss it.!

The Red Lion is situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park. We are approximately 4 miles south east of Bakewell and 4 miles north east of Matlock. The stately homes of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are close by as are ancient stone circles, rock pinnacles and splendid walking country.

The Inn is a focal point for locals and visitors alike with its traditional beers, wide selection of wines and spirits and great value meals.

Every year thousands of walkers and tourists seeking history and atmospheric scenery marvel at the nearby Nine Ladies stone circle on Stanton Moor, thought to date from the Bronze Age. It was probably erected around 1500 B.C. Many go to the Druid Rocks in Birchover, tracing the ancient priest's footsteps and even sitting in their carved stone armchairs. Then, with thoughts of sacrifice and strange rituals doing little to spoil their appetite, they head for the pub.

Offering a good slice of history along with traditional food and ales is the 'Red Lion Inn'. Built in 1680 as a farm and alehouse it was granted its first licence in 1722 - when licensing became law.

A free house, 'The Red Lion' has a reputation for traditional ales and fine food. All of us at the Red Lion are here to provide our customers with outstanding service and product quality.

Situated in the heart of the village, the Red Lion Inn, Birchover, is a traditional pub serving real ales and home-cooked food. The pub has been featured in the ‘Good Beer guide 2010’, AA ‘Good food guide’ and recently won Matlock and district CAMRA pub of the season.
Having been recently refurbished, The Red Lion has been bought up to date although many of the original features such as the 30ft well and 300yr old oak beams remain.

Owners Matteo and Alyson Frau’s aim is to provide rustic, honest food with some Sardinian dishes in a comfortable setting in one of the prettiest villages in the Peak.

The Red Lion Inn provides an ideal rest break for walkers wanting a light meal or anyone wanting something a little more substantial on a relaxed night out.
We allow muddy boots and well-behaved dogs in our tap room where they can warm up around our log burners throughout winter.

We are family friendly and provide smaller versions of some of the home-cooked meals on our menu for younger diners. We source our ingredients locally where possible and even produce our own award-winning ricotta (Bakewell show ’09) and mozzarella.

We usually have four real ales on tap which change from week to week although Peak ales (brewed at Chatsworth) and Peakstones Rock brewery are regulars. We also stock traditional Perry and Scrumpy on tap.

Special evenings are held throughout winter such as Sardinian night, pie supper night and set menus.
Regular menu ranges from £3.95 for a starter to £13 main course. To tempt your taste buds – wild rabbit and mirto terrine (starter), and slow cooked Chatsworth lamb shank with root vegetables and bilberry reduction (main).
Meals are served from Tuesday to Thursday 12 noon to 2.00pm/ 6pm to 9pm. Friday, Saturday & Sunday 12 noon to 2.30 pm/ 6pm to 9pm (closed Mondays).
